Part 1 of 2 in a series on integrity
part 1 – what is integrity
part 2 – how to develop your integrity
In today’s fast past world we get over stimulated and it’s easy to leave behind some of our core values just to get things done.
We go with the flow.
We use existing systems and methods.
We try things we don’t understand.
We try to keep up with the Jones.
We try to blend in.
but something gets lost along the way
It’s not deliberate. It’s simply a result of life in a hurried world. Survival, self-fulfilment and even fatigue. We lose site of our virtues along the way just by trying to thrive or survive. By seeking prosperity we get lost in mediocrity. The means becomes more important than the end had in mind.
What did your parents tell you as a kid? One of the core messages I heard (and to a lesser extent as adults) was to do the right thing.
Integrity is doing the right thing, even if nobody is watching ~ author unknown
So integrity is a refusal to engage in behaviour that avoids responsibility. If you have to ask yourself “is something wrong with this”, it probably is.
being complete or whole
It stems from the Latin word integer or whole – being complete.
Consistent character traits that honour your beliefs, principles and values. It’s about giving the whole you in everything you do. Integrity is really just respect, fair treatment and quality. It’s being compassionate and gracious. It’s about constant self-improvement and atonement for your mistakes.
Giving it 100% – 100% of the time.
We lose site of how simple it really is.
That’s okay…fortunately, most of us have a treasure chest full of great virtues. Maybe integrity is currently stuck at the bottom. No problem. It’s never to late to pull it and give it back some life.
consider revitalizing your integrity
Bring it back. It’s a choice. Your choice. It is the cornerstone of any great organization or idea. When a person acts with integrity they exude many virtues including trust, honesty, value and reliability.
And something happens.
Not because of the hype. Not because of the image. Not because of the status. Not because of the product.
If you tell the truth you never have to remember anything ~ Mark Twain
People listen because they can trust the information and the source. You don’t have to let your guard down because you have nothing to hide. You can look people (and yourself) in the eye and say what you mean – almost stress free. You don’t have to worry about getting it right or wrong. It isn’t something you have to asks others – you just know.
You treat people with respect and get it offered back.
You can see the truth much clearer than others.
You take responsibility for your actions.
You are less likely to be attacked.
Something happens when you conduct your actions with integrity – you succeed. Take a look around and ask not why things aren’t working but instead ask one simple question “what’s the right thing to do?” There you have it…that’s integrity and it’s the answer to a better life and a better world.
